Usage of English for Foreign Students within America Essay

Usage of English for Foreign Students within America - Essay Example The theory that applies to the students who are taught English when they are studying at the US universities and colleges is that this language will help them in coming times and their future lives would be secured financially since they could be easily hired by any company around the world. This is a pretty significant aspect and one that needs to be understood in the global scheme of things. This language might not help them within their local areas but on a national and/or international front, these students are sure to get help from the usage of English language. Thus the students must not think in a narrow minded manner and look to study this language with all the zest and enthusiasm that they could offer to it. It is for their own betterment that they are asked to study the English language and no one else apart from them would be the winner at the very end. What I think of the whole issue is that the students need to make an effort to learn and understand this global language which is followed by literally everybody on earth. There should be no hiccups in the learning of this language and students must make dedicated efforts to acquire the basics of this very language. English looks to provide benefits to one and all and there is no doubt to this ideology all said and done.

Senate Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Senate - Essay Example CA senators are term-limited to two terms while US senators are not. Such structural differences however, are merely superficial. The importance of the California economy to the nation’s economy makes holding a job on, for example, the agriculture committee in CA a critical job, and one on par with many US Senate committee assignments. CA senators command great respect due to their role in overseeing the critical state budget and economy. While US Senators have more formal powers due to appointment oversight roles, the structural differences between the jobs – even in light of the term limits – can be made too much of. Both jobs serve critical legislative functions. Where the real differences between the two bodies exist is found in political factors. Because the CA senate has been continuously in the hands of the Democratic Party since 1970, it is essentially a one-party system. Republicans state senators can have impact on their specific districts, but the stat ewide power is held exclusively by a single party.

Differences Between RPC And RMI

Differences Between RPC And RMI In enterprise application there is possibility that resources need to be access across multiple system to do a business process. One of the Javas solutions for distributed application is Remote Method Invocation (RMI). Objective of this paper is understand how a RMI system works in real time scenarios and how enterprise application can implemented using java RMI APIs. An enterprise distributed system is a set of objects that isolates the consumers of services from the providers of services by a well-defined interface. In other words, clients are completely abstracted from the implementation of business method as data structure and executable code. This is how one can distinguish with simple client / server application with object based remote invocation method model. In the distributed enterprise object model, a client sends a request message to an object, which in turns analyzes the request to decide what service to perform. This business entity service, selection could be performed by either the object or a broker. Remote Method Invocation (RMI): RMI is one of the possible ways to access distributed business objects from another JVM and RMI uses object serialization to marshal and unmarshal parameters. If you want send objects across the wire, your class (object) need to implements Serializable interface. Here is the RMI architecture and how RMI s works internally. RMI Transport Layer Client Server skeleton stub Interface Interface Client Process Server Process Process According to sun web site Java Remote Method Invocation (Java RMI) enables the programmer to create distributed Java technology-based to Java technology-based applications, in which the methods of remote Java objects can be invoked from other Java virtual machines*, possibly on different hosts. RMI uses object serialization to marshal and unmarshal parameters and does not truncate types, supporting true object-oriented polymorphism. When a enterprise server process wants to export some remote method invocation based service to consumer, it does so by registering remote method invocation enabled objects with its local rmiregistry (Registry interface). Every remote object is registered with a name consumer can use to reference it. A consumer can obtain a reference of stub to the remote object by requesting for the remote object by name through the Naming interface. The argument for Naming.lookup() method is name of a remote object and locates the object on the network. The objects fully qualified name can be composed with host name port and the name of the object look like url syntax for the naming resource. Few of the terminology one should know about RMI are listed below. rmiregistry A executable program used to bind remote object to names and that provides a bootstrap naming service which is used by servers on the server machine. JVMs on client and server machines can then look up remote objects and make remote method invocations. rmic: The rmic compiler tool generates stub, and skeleton class files for remote objects. These classes files are generated from the compiled Java language classes that contain remote object implementations (implemented java.rmi.Remote interface). skeleton : A skeleton for a remote object is a JRMP protocol server side business object that contains a method which dispatch calls to the actual remote object realization. stub: A proxy object for a remote object which is responsible for delegating method on remote objects to the server where implementation of the actual remote object resides. A consumer program reference to a remote object, therefore, is actually a reference to a local stub. Remote Interface: The Remote interface serves to recognize interfaces whose methods may be invoked from a non-local virtual machine. Any object that is a remote object must directly or indirectly implement this interface. Difference between RPC and RMI Remote procedure call (RPC) is a network communication protocol with server and client architecture and the idea behind RPC is to call implemented code remotely as if we were just calling a function. The only difference between RMI and RPC is in case of RPC functions are invoked through a proxy function, and in case of RMI we invoke methods through a proxy object. RMI is java solution to RPC, with connectivity to existing systems using native methods. RMI can take a natural, direct, and fully powered approach to provide a enterprise distributed computing technology that allows us to add Java functionality throughout the system. To get the cross-platform portability that Java provides, RPC requires a lot more overheads than RMI. RPC has to convert the arguments between architecture so that each computer can use its native data type. Java-RMI is tightly coupled with the Java language. Whereas RPC is not specific to any single language and one can implement RPC using different language. Because RMI can implemented using Java, its get all the advantages like object oriented, parallel computing, design pattern, easy to write and re use, safe and secure, Write once and run anywhere. But in the case of RPC, to achieve any of these advantages one has to write implementation code. Sample application: To demonstrate RMI and distributed application in real time I have implemented a Lottery system. The Lottery system is developed as per UK Lotto system. Assuming that user before using this RMI client application already purchased the lottery ticket. Lottery client system displays the welcome message to customer. Lottery system also displays the winning amount to the customer. The Lottery system is developed as per UK Lotto system. But simplifying system I have modified certain rules. Here how winner is chosen. Jackpot, Match 6: Â £500,000 Match 5 numbers: Â £1,500 Match 4 numbers: Â £60 Match 3 numbers: Â £10. System asks customer to enter positive integer number ranging 1 to 49. Once he enters all 6 numbers Lottery system generate 6 winning non-repeating random number between 1 to 49. System checks the match between user entered number and server generated number and calculate winning amount and display the result Implementation: Here is how I have implemented Lottery system Define a remote interface import java.rmi.Remote; public interface LotteryGenerator extends Remote { public ArrayList getLottoryNumber() throws java.rmi.RemoteException; } Implement the remote interface Below is the just a snippet of the implementation class for the remote interface. I have not listed the supporting private methods of the class. import java.rmi.RemoteException; public class LotteryGeneratorImpl extends java.rmi.server.UnicastRemoteObject implements LotteryGenerator{ private ArrayList numbers; // Integer array for holding repeat private ArrayList lot; private java.util.Random gen; public ArrayList getLottoryNumber(){ lot.clear(); for(int i=0;i

The Maturation of a Maternal Bond in Morning Song Essay examples -- Mo

The Maturation of a Maternal Bond in Morning Song  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   What is the only difference between the emotions of an ordinary smiling new mother in the 1960's and those of Sylvia Plath when she writes her melancholy "Morning Song" soon after her child's birth?   While most new mothers pretended all was well, Plath published her true feelings. Simply because society held that all new mothers should be filled with immense joy after giving birth does not mean that they actually were.   Plath had the courage to admit she was confused, and her poem, "Morning Song," focuses on one woman's mixed senses of apprehension and of awe upon the birth of her child which create both feelings of separation and affection that contend to determine the strength of her maternal bond.    The first line of Plath's poem, "Love set you going like a fat gold watch," shows the emotional forces conflicting within the mother's mind. The fact that she chooses the word "love" rather than a more carnal image like "sex" shows that the infant was conceived from an intimate bond and creates a positive connection between mother and child. Using simile, "a fat gold watch," changes the impact of this line. While the word "fat" alludes to the cumbersome nature of the infant, the word "gold" represents the child as precious and valued, and the word "watch" conjures to mind the seemingly endless task of raising a child. In her book The Second Sex, Simone de Beauvoir asserts that "a whole complex of economical and sentimental considerations makes the baby seem either a hindrance or a jewel," but Plath's "fat gold watch" suggests a newborn can be both (509). Detachment caused by the mother's sense of apprehension is evident as she says to her child, "New statu... ...h which she receives the baby's cries suggests that she is touched by the baby's humanity, its unique individuality. In "Morning Song," the mother's bond to her infant strengthens as she tries to deny it. While attempting to prove that she has no connection to this new life, the bonds become undeniable as the infant opposes her with his or her "clear vowels." This "handful of notes" is all that is needed to dispel all pretenses of indifference toward the child. As the cries "rise like balloons" so too, it seems, do the mother's spirits and attitude toward the new life she has brought into the world.   Works Cited de Beauvoir, Simone. The Second Sex. How to Gain Weight Eating Healthy Food

Goal: How to gain weight eating healthy food? I want to improve my physical wellness by gaining weight while staying healthy. Behavior Strategy: I. Gather data on what type of food is fattening, but in a healthy way. II. Get help from a nutritionist to make sure I eat healthy foods, but that will also make me gain weight. III. Make a schedule / meal plan to make sure I get more than enough calories on a daily basis. IV. I make a goal for myself to gain ten pounds in six months. Journal Articles Article 1: â€Å"What to Eat to Gain weight-The healthy Way†In Glamour magazine, I found this article â€Å"What to Eat to Gain Weight—The Healthy Way†. This article shows how a person can improve her life style eating healthier, but still gaining weight. One of Glamour’s fashion interns, Ashley, tried a new diet with the help of Rachel Beller, a nutritionist. Rachel looked at her daily choices of food, and made a schedule for Rachel to improve her diet to eat healt hier, but still intake enough calories to gain weight. Ashley will change all her daily habits, and adopt a whole new diet rich in proteins and carbohydrates.Rachel Beller said that Ashley has the right approach in order to gain weight, because she eats three meals and two snacks a day, which is exactly what to do in order to gain weight, she says. Besides, Rachel says that Ashley eats the right amount of calories, but her food choices are too high in simple carbohydrates and unhealthy saturated fats. The nutritionist advises to focus instead in foods with high fiber cereals for breakfast, and high calorie, nutrient-dense meals for lunch and dinner. She also insists in eating whole grain carbs, which have the same amount of calories than regular carbs, however with more fibers. Also, Rachel points out that most people thing in volume when they want to gain weight. The key in gaining weight is choosing low-volume high-calorie snacks, such as granola, nuts, and pretzels, among others. This article I found extremely interesting because it completely applies to my health goal. I used to think gaining weight came along when you eat a lot of food. Reading this made me realize that the quality of food is more important than the quantity. This is the key to my problem. I found it very inconvenient to eat a lot of food all day every day, because I’m not a big eater.Knowing that I can eat a normal amount of food and still can weight makes me think that I can finally reach my goal weight. Rachel Beller made a meal plan suggestion that I already started to apply in my daily habits. It is not constraining, and I really start to find a difference in my life. I don’t fell stressed anymore if I don’t eat a lot because I’m running around too much. I know that what I eat is high in calories protein, and fiber, which will help me maintain or gain weight. Plus, I can finally work out without worrying about losing weight if I don’t indulge in a go od amount of food.Article 2: â€Å"Healthy Foods to Help You Gain Weight† On the website About. com I found an article called â€Å"Healthy Foods to Help You Gain Weight†. This article breaks down the different types of food that are rich in calories. It is said that if you want to gain weight you have to add extra calories in your diet. However, instead of indulging in junk food, instead you should choose foods that are nutrient dense and energy dense. The article shows eight different foods that are fattening but high in good calories. It says, if you want to make good choices while gaining weight you need to focus in nutrient dense calories, which are: Bagels, Pasta, Dried Fruits, Healthy Oils, Avocados, Nuts and Seeds, Granola, and Fruit juice. Most of these foods are extremely healthy, while giving enough nutrients to your body on a daily basis. If you stick with a diet including high fibers, and nutrient, your body mass will increase over time. This article really opened my horizons in what type of food I should eat to reach my goal. I used to have no idea what kinds of foods were rich in calories but healthy. Now I can apply what the article says into my diet. I used to eat a lot of things for breakfast but that were just high in energy without giving me any fat. Now I can eat a bagel with granola and fruit juice, and have a lot more calories for breakfast than I used to. This list of foods has made it so much easier for me to reach my goal without stressing over the amount that I eat and what I eat. Now I have a meal plan for my everyday meals, and it includes all these foods. I just stick with my plan and see how it goes. Right now, I already feel so much better, and I already see a difference in y body. I fill my clothes better than I used to, and to me it’s so motivating to keep up my efforts. Current event articles Article 1: â€Å"Using a weight gain diet to Increase Body Mass Quickly† According to the article, â€Å"Usi ng a weight gain diet to Increase Body Mass Quickly† from the website weight gain diet; it is important to dissociate gaining weight and junk food. The author points out that usually most people think of gaining weight by indulging in sugar and fat. However, even for skinny people it isn’t the right choice to decide to eat about anything in order to gain weight.Underweight people are still at risk if binging on fatty foods, meaning they can get diseases such as cholesterol. That is why it is important to know what to eat in order to gain healthy weight. The foods promoting weight gain are the one rich in protein. However, there are proteins healthier than others. For instance, fish proteins are healthier than red meat proteins. Also, fruits are good to include in a diet, along with vegetables. It is also important to stick with whole grains which are the healthiest. In addition, most people looking to gain weight avoid working out because they think they will burn the c alories needed to gain weight. However, according to the author, this is a myth. Exercising is very important for maintaining a healthy body, and even though someone is trying to gain weight it is important to include exercising in ones diet. In my case, I found this article extremely helpful for my objective. I would usually try to indulge in high protein foods such as beef, chicken and cheese without even knowing that there are unhealthier proteins than others. Also, I would eat regular dairy products without being aware that low fat dairy products weren’t just for losing weight diets.Besides, vegetables can also be a good source of proteins. I thought all vegetables were good for their nutritious factors only, but not for gaining weight. It appears that beans and lentils are extremely good sources of proteins. Another false idea I had before reading this article was, working out isn’t good if you want to gain weight. A year ago, I started to go to the gym five days a week. I realized after few weeks of daily work out that I lost a good amount of weight, so I stopped working out. I wasn’t eating the right type of food, rich in good carbs and proteins.According to the article, it is essential to exercise during a weight gaining diet, because it helps burn the fat that isn’t good for your body. Now that I know what types of food are nutrient dense, I will include a daily workout routine in my weight gaining diet. Article 2: â€Å"Healthy Eating & Diet-Healthy Ways to Gain Weight† Kathleen M. Zelman explains the different ways to gain weight while making good choices. She thinks being a little underweight isn’t a problem health wise; however, it can be an issue if a person doesn’t feel comfortable and would like to look a bit fuller.Doctor Zelman insists on the fact that even skinny people should be cautious of their food choices, and wanting to gain weight â€Å"is not about bellying up to an all-you-can-eat buf fet†. Gaining weight comes when you go for nutrient rich foods. High calories foods are essential, but nutrients are even more. It is important to stay away from sugar, fat and empty calories foods. However, fat is important to gain weight but not all fats are good for you. For instance, fat from nuts are healthier than fat from meat. Also, it is primordial to eat often, like six meals a day, which are three meals and two snacks. Moreover, when exercising, it is imperative to indulge in more calories than usual. If you want to gain weight eating more calories than your body will burn is essential. Also, high protein foods are a good choice, because it helps your muscles recover faster. These foods are fish, lean meats, poultry, legumes, eggs, and whole grains, among others. If a person doesn’t eat enough because of a lack of appetite, eating foods that you like or spicing up bland food can help. This article was very informative. Now, I have all the keys to gain weight. I need to eat often, choose high nutrient foods, and exercise.I used to think three meals a day were enough. However, snacks are considered mini meals. Snacking isn’t only negative. If you make good choices snaking helps with the process of gaining weight. Also, I’m the type of person who won’t feel hungry at all time. According to Doctor Zelman, it is important to lean toward the foods that are in your liking, or using spices to add up some taste on foods that are bland. Very often I feel hungry but I don’t know what I want so I end up not eating. Now, I know what types of food are rich in nutrients, and that I like, so I can stick with these when I don’t feel very hungry.Gaining weight is all about making a new routine for yourself, and knowing what is good for you. Objective Research Most people don’t realize that sometimes it can be much easier to lose weight than to gain weight. Most people that struggle with their weight would want to look healthier and fuller. It is not easy to gain weight and most people that want to lose weight don’t understand it. The majority of people that are overweight don’t understand people who want to gain weight, and think that they are just seeking attention. Yes, it is unhealthy to be overweight, yet, being underweight can be as unhealthy.According to Beth W. Orenstein from the article How to Gain Healthy weight, â€Å"Depending on how underweight you are, it could be just as unhealthy as being overweight†. People usually hear about the health risks of being overweight. However, nobody really hears about the health risks of being underweight. Most people have misconception on the way you are supposed to look, and are driven to lose weight because of the media. Every day, when watching TV, the stick thin figures of models, and other celebrities, are advertised all over. For most people, being thin is how everyone is supposed to look.It became the norm of how soci ety perceives how people should look. However, according to the article, what are the health risks of being underweight? Lillian Downey tells us that being underweight comes with severe health issues. It can cause infertility in women, osteoporosis, and decrease immune function. In the article Lillian says that â€Å"low body weight, intense, prolonged physical activity, low calorie and nutrient restricted diets often cause women to stop ovulating and menstruating†. This affects the functioning of the reproductive system. Moreover, poor nutrient intake, and low body mass affect bones’ health. People that are underweight have more fragile bones. â€Å"Persons who are severely underweight may suffer from loss of muscle mass, which supports bones and joints, and helps prevent bone breaks, dislocations and fractures†. Lastly, the immune system is affect by low body mass. Low consumption of fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals weakens normal immune function, says Ms . Downey. Being underweight has other side effects. It can be dangerous to be underweight depending on how underweight you are.According to the article Dangers of Underweight, the negative effects are: Prone to infection (comprised immune system), Low muscle mass, Hair loss, Irregular hormone regulation, Osteoporosis, Anemia, Pregnancy complications (or inability to get pregnant), Menstrual irregularities. People have misconceptions about skinny people. They think that everyone wants to be thin, so why someone would possibly want to gain weight. People need to realize that skinny isn’t the way to be. It can be very unhealthy, and bring serious health issues. They drive to diet because they want to be â€Å"normal†, which means get to the status of Hollywood, and what the media portrays about what it is to be beautiful. In America, people are really into the whole glamour scene of Hollywood celebrities. They look up to these celebrities and see them as their role model. This means being thin is the way to go, and is how people is supposed to look like. It is important for people to take care of their body, and be more health conscious. Being overweight or underweight can be equally as unhealthy. Eating right is more important than ever. The way you look is subjective to what you eat.So instead of doing drastic changes to gain weight, it is important to eat well. Loading in junk food will bring you the calories that you are supposed to take per day; however, it won’t be good calories. Eating well and nutrient dense foods, will help you can weight in the wanted areas of your body. This will avoid building fat around the belt area. Summary and Conclusion This project successfully broadened my horizon in being food health conscious. All my life I dreamed about having a fuller figure. I wanted to fill my clothes with more curves. I rapidly understood how much of a struggle gaining weight can be.Everyone around me always told me â€Å"why do you want to gain weight while everyone wants to lose weight? † I never really could open up about my issue because no one could understand it. Today, I finally made the decision of changing my lifestyle to the better. All my researches talked about similar ways to gain weight. This includes mainly eating more often, eating nutrient dense foods, and exercising. Since January I have been following this gain weight diet, and surprisingly for the first time in my life it worked. In three month and a half I gained eight pounds. My goal was to gain ten pounds, but I’m really happy about the outcome.I would have never thought I could gain this much in a little time. My daily routine was to eat three nice meals per day, and two snakes. For breakfast, I always eat a whole grain bagel with butter, oatmeal with raisins in it, and two eggs. For lunch and dinner I always eat at least one kind of vegetables with meat of fish, and carbs such as pasta, or rice. I also snack on nuts a lot. I always carry almonds, pistachios or cashew in my bag, if I don’t have much time. If I have time I make myself smoothies with at least three types of fruit with milk, and orange juice, and I also add two scoops of vanilla ice-cream.Also, I make myself peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or I eat Greek yogurts. Even if I’m not hungry I force myself to eat at least a yogurt for a snack or a banana. This project was extremely successful for me. I have a whole new health conscious routine that I will keep forever from now on. I’m today weighing 118 pounds, and would like to be 125 pounds. As soon as I will reach my ideal weight I will keep eating healthy but I won’t stress so much on eating fatty foods. Advantage and Disadvantage of Owning Bicycle

It's easy to see the advantages of owning bicycle in close city for example Eskisehir. It has a lot of advantages on a lot of titles, although it has disadvantages about many titles. One of the main advantages of owning bicycle has not problem about traffic. you can ride a bike where cars is not driven and you can enter narrow street. another main advantage is being healtier than before cycling. you ride a bike with your leg and your leg's mussles also work and than it puts your blood pressure in order. In addition to this, fuel is unnecessary for cycling, so your money stays in your pocket. On the other hand cycling has some disadvantage. The main disadvantage is about weather so it is hard which is cycling at cold weather days especially in winter. Riding a bike can be responsible for getting cold. Another disadvantage is about speed. It is not for people who is loving speed also there is a problem about this title that it is very hard to go far away, cycling is for close towns. that is not all. there is one more problem about cycling that if you have an accident your body can be injured very badly. You can wear protect clothes although you may be injured very badly. In my opinion owning bicycle is good thing. In general, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. At least it is better than walking for transporting and than experts say that riding a bike one hour in a day is good for being healtier. The problem is that some people can be shy because of riding a bicycle but if you ask me I think they don't have to be shy for this transport style because it is not shameful thing. For this reason I invite everybody to cycle.

Street Gangs

Street Gangs Research Report on Trends:Street GangsFormation of Street GangsThe influence and impact of street gangs in urban areas has been growing and it continues to grow. Estimates say that there could be hundreds of thousands possibly millions of people that are associated to some sort of a significant street gang. Many psychologists believe that due to poverty and lack of education many teens join gangs. Others believe music and the media encourages teens and adolescences to join gangs. While on the other hand sociologists believe it is due to peer pressure and lack of supervision from families that cause teens and adolescences to join gangs.Psychologists believe that due to a lack education many teens and young adults can't find a job, this leads them to join a gang. They get involved in the illegal activities such as illegal drug and firearm trade executed by the gangs that can get them financial aid.Crip handsign.People who live in the 'slums' and 'ghettos' of cities particularly males, believe that getting involved in gang activity is the only way to earn money as they are denied further education due to financial problems. Some psychologist also believe that the rap music industry and violent movies encourage young teens to join gangs. They believe that young teens listen to violent rap songs that encourage the use of guns and narcotic use. Eventually these teens believe that owning guns or doing drugs will gain them status like the rappers they listen to and gain them respect in the community.Sociologist believe that teens and young adults join gangs as they don't get sufficient attention, supervision or care from their families and look to gangs as an 'alternate family'. These people are denied strong relationships with their families so they join gangs because they are looking for close...

Free Essays on No Power

â€Å"No Power!† was the cry which sounded throughout the house on an early February morning. The night before freezing rain had continuously cascaded down the rooftops, freezing everything in its path. The power outages began early that next morning and reached the house shortly after the cock crowed. At first, the family saw nothing but the disadvantages and the inconveniences which would be caused by the loss of electricity, but after a few hours they began to see some of the benefits. It was still fairly early in the morning when the family discovered the lack of power. There was repeated fumbling with light switches and other electrical devices which had become a part of their everyday lives. The provider of the family was still forced to brave the treacherous roads that morning and left the three remaining members of the family to fend for themselves at home. Together these three began to list everything that they were now unable to do. They could not watch television, play on the computer, play video games, dry their hair, use the stove, bake in the oven, turn on the dishwasher, wash clothes, or even open the refrigerator for fear that the cold air would escape and doom their food to rancidness. The three even made a decision that every time someone tried to turn on a light, they must yell out â€Å"Damn it!† Throughout the day the majority of the light switches in this family’s house were condemned to hell. Although, this did help to lighten the ir mood, it did not change the fact that they were unable to do what they wanted to do the most. After some time, when reading became too boring and pacing became too tiring, the three family members decided that they must do something lest they go insane from boredom. The youngest of the three volunteered to run and fetch the Monopoly board and was immediately answered with groans of disdain. She replied with, â€Å"Well, what else are we going to do?† Although she was indeed young,... Theory and Practice Behind the Creeping Barrage of WW1

Theory and Practice Behind the Creeping Barrage of WW1 The creeping/rolling barrage is a slowly moving artillery attack acting as a defensive curtain for infantry following closely behind. The creeping barrage is indicative of the First World War, where it was used by all belligerents as a way to bypass the problems of trench warfare. It did not win the war (as once hoped)  but played an important role in the final advances.   Invention The creeping barrage was first used by Bulgarian artillery crews during the siege of Adrianople in March 1913, over a year before the war began. The wider world took little notice and the idea had to be re-invented again in 1915-16, as a response to both the static, trench-based, warfare into which the swift early movements of the First World War had stalled  and the inadequacies of existing artillery barrages. People were desperate for new methods, and the creeping barrage seemed to offer them. The Standard Barrage Throughout 1915, infantry attacks were preceded by as massive an artillery bombardment as possible, intended to pulverize both the enemy troops and their defenses. The barrage could go on for hours, even days, with the aim of destroying everything under them. Then, at an allotted time, this barrage would cease - usually switching to deeper secondary targets - and the infantry would climb out of their own defenses, rush across the contested land and, in theory, seize land which was now undefended, either because the enemy was dead or cowering in bunkers. The Standard Barrage Fails In practice, barrages frequently failed to obliterate either the enemys deepest defensive systems and attacks turned into a race between two infantry forces, the attackers trying to rush across No Mans Land before the enemy realized the barrage was over and returned (or sent replacements) to their forward defenses...and their machine guns. Barrages could kill, but they could neither occupy land nor hold the enemy away long enough for infantry to advance. Some tricks were played, such as stopping the bombardment, waiting for the enemy to man their defenses, and starting it again to catch them in the open, only sending their own troops later on. The sides also became practiced at being able to fire their own bombardment into No Mans Land when the enemy sent their troops forward into it. The Creeping Barrage In late 1915/early 1916, Commonwealth forces began developing a new form of barrage. Beginning close to their own lines, the creeping barrage moved slowly forward, throwing up dirt clouds to obscure the infantry who advanced close behind. The barrage would reach the enemy lines and suppress as normal (by driving men into bunkers or more distant areas) but the attacking infantry would be close enough to storm these lines (once the barrage had crept further forward) before the enemy reacted. That was, at least, the theory. The Somme Apart from Adrianople in 1913, the creeping barrage was first used at The Battle of the Somme in 1916, at the orders of Sir Henry Horne; its failure exhibits several of the tactics problems. The barrages targets and timings had to be arranged well beforehand and, once started, could not be easily changed. At the Somme, the infantry moved slower than expected and the gap between soldier and barrage was sufficient for German forces to man their positions once the bombardment had passed. Indeed, unless bombardment and infantry advanced in almost perfect synchronization there were problems: if the soldiers moved too fast they advanced into the shelling and were blown up; too slow and the enemy had time to recover. If the bombardment moved too slow, allied soldiers either advanced into it or had to stop and wait, in the middle of No Mans Land and possibly under enemy fire; if it moved too fast, the enemy again had time to react. Success and Failure Despite the dangers, the creeping barrage was a potential solution to the stalemate of trench warfare and it was adopted by all the belligerent nations. However, it generally failed when used over a relatively large area, such as the Somme, or was relied upon too heavily, such as the disastrous battle of the Marne in 1917. In contrast, the tactic proved much more successful in localized attacks where targets and movement could be better defined, such as the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Taking place the same month as the Marne, the Battle of Vimy Ridge saw Canadian forces attempting a smaller, but much more precisely organized creeping barrage which advanced 100 yards every 3 minutes, slower than commonly tried in the past. Opinions are mixed on whether the barrage, which became an integral part of WW1 warfare, was a general failure or a small, but necessary, part of the winning strategy. One thing is certain: it wasnt the decisive tactic generals had hoped for. No Place In Modern War Advances in radio technology – which meant soldiers could carry transmitting radios around with them and co-ordinate support – and developments in artillery - which meant barrages could be placed much more precisely - conspired to make the blind sweeping of the creeping barrage redundant in the modern era, replaced by pinpoint strikes called in as needed, not pre-arranged walls of mass destruction.

Business Plan - Keep My Heart Adult Medical Day Care, Part 2 Essay

Business Plan - Keep My Heart Adult Medical Day Care, Part 2 - Essay Example market segment in line with its fundamental objectives of providing customized day care services, as well as medical care for Alzheimer’s elderly patients. Whereas the US rank among the most populated counties in the world, its healthcare index indicates that aging is a major factor of public health concern. Accordingly, about 14% of the population are facing health problems associated with dementia and aging. Out of these, more that 5.3million have been diagnosed with various forms of dementia including Alzheimer’s disease (Adelman & Daly, 2005). Despite the fact that a significant proportion of the elderly population in America is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, the government has not instituted proper systems to address their needs. In addition, the existing healthcare facilities are less concerned with the challenges affecting the ailing aged population of the US community as observed by Wheeler (2009). To that end, it is rather a noble course to redefine this segment of the healthcare market. Taking into account the overwhelming realities of neglect and poor medical care for the elderly, Keep My Heart Adult Medical Day Care has singled out two specific segments of this market. The first segment refers to the elderly population suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and any other traumatic brain injuries. Ideally, this segment comprises persons aged 55 years and above most of whom have retired and are in their 60s. They will need professional attention and daily social health care to add value to their lives. The second segment relates to elderly persons suffering from other forms dementia other than Alzheimer’s disease. At this point, Keep My heart Adult Medical Day Care is interested in elderly patients who are not sick enough to live in nursing homes. As such, the proposed business venture will offer comfortable ambience for this segment thereby providing basic day care services for the ailing adults. Among other

The effect of oil and gas on Qatar's economy Research Paper

The effect of oil and gas on Qatar's economy - Research Paper Example The research findings and analysis could be used to determine the influence of the oil and gas sector on the economy of Qatar and the trend of economic performance of the country over the last few decades. Qatar was merely a pearl fishing center until 1940 when the oil and gas fields were explored in the country for production and extraction of oil and natural gas. The oil and gas sector in Qatar is one of the major contributors to the economy of Qatar. The petroleum industry in the oil and gas sector has a share of 60% of the gross domestic product of Qatar. The country earns 85% of its export from the sale of oil and gas extracted in the geographical boundaries of the country. It has been found that the government earns 70% of the total revenues from the oil and gas sector of the country. The oil and gas sector of Qatar has given the country the highest per capita GDP among the nations in the world. Qatar has huge volumes of proven oil and gas reserves amounting to a volume of 15 b illion barrels that is expected to provide a sustainable economic output of the country for the coming 23 years. The natural gas of Qatar amounts to a reserve exceeding 7000 cubic kilometer which forms 5% of the total natural gas reserves in the world. Qatar ranks third in the capacity of natural gas reserves in the world. The economic performance of Qatar over the last decades have been presented below in tabular form in terms of GDP, currency conversion rate with respect to the GDP, inflation index and the per capita income of the country.

Choose a good topic for me - Research Paper Example He argues that the long summer holidays can be compared to the extra tuition that other children get in other countries and this keeps our children lacking behind in a global race. In the article by Judith Burns, she has mentioned that Gove says, â€Å"If you look at the length of the school day in England, the length of the summer holiday, and we compare it to the extra tuition and support that children are receiving elsewhere, then we are fighting or actually running in this global race in a way that ensures that we start with a significant handicap†. I disagree with the proposition put forward by Michael Gove. Although school hours are a significant part of the child’s learning and cognitive development but time spent with family and at home is also equally important. Children nowadays are faced with a lot of peer pressure, academic challenges and burdensome school assignments. Starting from school they are working really hard to get into good colleges to secure their futures. I strongly feel that although it is of importance to keep up with the global changes and prepare for the challenges put forward by the world, children need time to relax and enjoy things in life other than arithmetic and English literature. Summer holidays prove as a good opportunity for the children to have some time away from the daily burdensome routines and relax their minds. This is of great significance for the normal and healthy development of the

Capital Asset Pricing Model Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Capital Asset Pricing Model - Essay Example In most business, risks are often associated with each venture that entities partake. Logically, every endeavour can be affected by several stressors and will result to unsure forecasts. Indeed, firms are unaware of the exact benefits that an investment despite the forecasts provided by financial analysts. In determining the return that investments will likely provide, organisations make use of cash flows. Comparing the cash the flowed out from the investment to the cash that flowed in because of the investment appears to be a near accurate approach that results to better understanding of investment returns. Basically, there are certain tools and mechanisms used by firms to justify the use of cash flows. In particular, discounted multi-period risky cash flows are used to determine benefits coming from investments. Accordingly, the capital asset pricing model is one option that most financial analysts prefer. The succeeding discussions will tackle on the use of capital asset pricing model as basis for discounted multi-period risky cash flows. The prevalence of investments has led to several ideas particularly on the side showing benefits attributed to such activities. For investors, it is important to determine the exact amount that will be gained from the investment. Essentially, there were several methods developed to address this need. Taggart (1999) created capital budgeting analysis model that makes use of the discounted cash flow. Accordingly, this model enables investors to forecast the values of cash flow components. Among the models, this is considered as widely used because of the perceived precision. Another useful model was developed by Mahoney and Kelliher (1999), which focuses on the capital budgeting model that integrates uncertainty in the cash flow estimates. Using the Monte Carlo simulation, the model can serve as a practical and useful tool. The model, however, is embedded with higher level of complexity that can affect capital budgeting decisions. Moreover, Winston (1998) devised a model for multi-period capital budgeting using Silver Tool, which is an application in Excel. The model provides several advantages including selection of the best project considering all constraints and circumstances. Aside from the mentioned models, Ragsdale (2001) illustrated a model that uses Solver to determine optimal combination of capital budgeting investments as affected by capital constraints and maximising the Net Present Value. In this process, optimal selection of investment is ascertained considering vital risks that include the probability of success of minimum and maximum revenues with the other aspects previously mentioned. Data tables, as showed by Benninga (2000) can be used in capital budgeting analysis. The process involves computing for the point estimate of NPV, and the NPV is calculated using predetermined growth rates. The results are useful in evaluating the risk of the project with the given NPV ranges. Interestingly, Mayes and Shank (2001) focused on the use of different applications for capital budgeting analysis. This involves the collaboration of the models presented earlier in this discussion. Part of their model was to incorporate risk-adjusted discount rates and Monte Carlo simulation to evaluate project risks. According to Fama (1970), multi-period investment consumption can be associated with an individual's

Film Assignment Essay Example for Free

Film Assignment Essay For this assignment, I chose the 1996 movie â€Å"A Time to Kill† is applying Carl Roger’s Model of Argument. The film is based on the novel of the same title by John Grisham that tells the story of finding justice amidst the racial bigotry of the South. It is the story about a black man, Carl Lee Hailey, who killed the men who raped and mauled his 10-year old daughter Tonya and is looking at a death sentence should he be found guilty of murder in court in a town where racial prejudice continues to abound. It is through the efforts of his defense lawyer, Jake Brigance that Carl Lee was acquitted and released (McConnnaghuey and Jackson 1996). At first glance, a debate is very likely to ensue. Some would say Carl Lee is guilty because he broke the law by murdering the suspects. The latter had been arrested and should have been given their day in court and let the law take its course. They believe that revenge was Carl Lee’s motive for taking matters in his own hands and that the death penalty is appropriate because of what he did, consistent to the adage, â€Å"the punishment must fit the crime. † Legally, Carl Lee is indeed guilty and the jury appears to be leaning towards that decision. However, looking at it from the other side, there are others, as personified by Jake, who believe Carl Lee did the right thing though it was very drastic. While it may be true that Carl Lee was legally guilty, this does not immediately mean he is morally wrong. In the latter part of the film, Jake won the case because he was able to find common ground, not only with the jury, but also to the audience. He took their attention away from Carl Lee and his act and instead focused it somewhere else on the actual victim Tonya. Jake did this by taking everyone on a â€Å"journey† inside Carl Lee’s mind, putting themselves in his place, retracing his road to perdition on the day his daughter came to him battered and bleeding to the time he killed the suspects. He closed the â€Å"journey† by telling the jury to now â€Å"imagine she were white. † This is the common ground Jake successfully established. The â€Å"secret† behind it was Jake is able to make the jury shed off any racial bias they may have by getting them to empathize with Carl Lee. The result was instead of looking at a black man seeking redress for the attack on his daughter, but just a father who is merely looking out for his daughter. It can be inferred that everyone on the jury would have done the same thing if the victim had been their own child. They also know how biased the justice system is in town and that black people never get a fair trial but in this case, Jake succeeded in making them see it from a different perspective. It is certain that everyone knows justice is not always found in the courtroom, especially in this town and there are times when doing the right thing means breaking the law because the law is not perfect as it is administered by a racially prejudiced society. What was substituted here is a deeper sense of justice that is common to all, rooted in religious beliefs. In other words, people like Carl Lee are guided by their personal morals that are very fundamental where it becomes easy to discern right from wrong. All in all, the film shows a demonstration on how the Rogerian Model is applied as â€Å"common ground† was established with the audience by the performers in the film through the use of empathy to establish this common ground. Intravenous Medications in the Nursing Environment

Intravenous Medications in the Nursing Environment Phoebe Roberts Administer and Monitor Intravenous Medications in the Nursing Environment Question 1 a. Signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia include fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, pale skin,  difficulty concentrating, brittle nails and shortness of breath. (Williams Hopper 2011 p. 562). b. As the patient has iron deficiency anaemia a blood transfusion is necessary to increase  haemoglobin levels within the blood as this helps to transport oxygen to cells and tissues. She also  has a history of PR bleeding. Therefore this blood transfusion is helping to replace volume lost, to  increase circulating blood volume and to improve the oxygen carrying capacity (Hamlin, Richardson-Tench, Davies 2009 pp 155,156) c. It is important to follow the Pico prep instructions as faecal matter can obscure the viewing of the  the colon. Pico prep aims to thoroughly cleanse the colon of any matter or gas to ensure that the  visual field is clear ( Corbett Banks 2011 pp. 675,676). d. Pico prep is an osmotic laxative, its action decreases the fluid absorption within the bowel which  then results in the onset of diarrhoea within 1-4 hours. Side effects can include abdominal bloating,  abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and flatulence. ( Tiziani 2013 pp. 876,879). e. The action of this medication would have quite an impact on this elderly patient. Although she  mobilises with a four wheel walker it would become increasingly difficult to mobilise to the toilet so  frequently to empty her bowels in time. This may increase the chances of her having a fall ( Williams   Hoper 2011 p. 747). Lowering the bed, having her four wheel walker in reach and the application of  hip protectors may aid in reducing the risk of her having a fall and in the chances of her having a fall  the hip protectors may aid in protecting that area.( Crisp, Taylor, Douglas, Rebeiro 2013. p. 454). Providing a bedside commode may also reduce the chances of falls as it is located closer to her than  the toilet may be. As she is an older patient the skin around the area may become excoriated and skin  breakdown may occur due to the acidity of the diarrhoea and the area frequently being wet. Barrier  creams should be applied to at risk areas for protection. Diarrhoea can also quickly cause dehydration  and electrolyte imbalances in the elderly, this may also have an impact on this patients fluid and  electrolyte levels (Williams Hopper 2011. pp. 275, 747). Question 2. a) This patient is displaying possible signs and symptoms of a suspected urinary tract infection such  as incontinence, a burning sensation when she voids, fever, confusion and blood stains on her pad. A urinalysis should be performed to support a diagnosis of a urinary tract infection ( Williams   Hopper 2011 p. 838). As she is incontinent of both urine and faeces a thorough skin assessment  should be performed to identify the areas at risk and to identify any change in skin integrity. Skin  turgor should also be assessed as this can indicate a sign of dehydration (Crisp et. al. 2013 p. 592). A  fluid balance chart should be maintained to assess if the patient is in a positive or negative fluid  balance and the weight of the patient should also be assessed as noticeable weight changes can  indicate hypovolaemia (Crisp et.al 2013 p.1214, Scott 2010 p. 62). Auscultation of the chest could  prove useful in determining the reason of the increased respiratory rate and low oxygen saturation  levels ( Lewis Foley 2011 p. 356). A falls risk assessment should also be performed as the elderly  patient has a few risk factors for falls such as confusion, reduced mobility an d is incontinent of urine  and faeces. This can help to implement interventions to reduce the risk of a fall ( Crisp et.al p. 454). As this patient is at risk of both hypovolaemia and hypokalaemia the doctor should be notified to  thoroughly assess the patient and implement therapy for a suspected urinary tract infection. b) Cranberry juice can be effective in helping to reduce pain when urinating and also prevents the  bacteria adhering to the wall of the bladder, this method can be helpful in reducing the pain of a  urinary tract infection however the patient is undergoing a procedure the next day, therefore this  intervention should be implemented with the approval of a medical officer. A heat pack could be  placed on her abdomen to relive any pain and discomfort along with the administration of an  antipyretic to reduce her fever and pain (Williams Hopper 2011 p. 840). As the patient is having  difficulty breathing she should be placed in a suitable position to help with proper lung expansion such  as the high fowlers position along with the administration of oxygen to increase oxygen levels within  the blood. (Williams Hopper 2011 p. 604). The patient’s vital signs should be continuously  assessed to monitor any improvements or deterioration especially her blood pressur e and heart rate  as any further abnormalities such as arrhythmias and a further decline in blood pressure could  indicate hypovolaemia and hypokalaemia. Continuous assessment of her neurological state should  also be implemented to monitor any changes (Scott 2010 p. 64). c. Hypokalaemia occurs due to an excessive loss of potassium from the body or from an inadequate  intake of potassium. The body is unable to conserve potassium and relies on an adequate intake of  potassium to maintain a balance within the body. An excessive loss of potassium can be due to  diuretic therapy – especially potassium wasting diuretics, corticosteroids, vomiting and diarrhoea. Signs and symptoms include an irregular weak pulse, hypotension, muscle cramps, muscle weakness  and shallow respirations. (Williams Hopper 2011 p. 79, Scott 2010 p. 98). Medical management is aimed at restoring potassium levels either by increasing the intake of  potassium in the diet or oral potassium supplements. Intravenous replacement therapy is also  implemented in those with severe hypokalaemia to rapidly increase potassium levels. Diuretics may  be changed to a potassium sparing diuretic to prevent the loss of potassium from the body. (Scott  2010 pp. 100,101). Nursing management includes monitoring fluid input and output, monitoring the heart rate and rhythm  of those receiving IV replacement therapy, maintaining and ensuring the correct administration of the  therapy and continuous monitoring of the patient’s condition throughout. ( Scott 2010 p.102). Hypovolaemia occurs due to the loss of fluid from the body and extracellular spaces; this can be due  to excessive bleeding, excessive sweating, burns, diuretic therapy, diarrhoea, renal impairment and  vomiting. The loss of fluid then results in a decreased blood volume. (Williams Hopper 2011 p.71,  Scott 2010 pp. 60, 61). Signs and symptoms include thirst, nausea, hypotension, restlessness,  confusion, dizziness, cool pale skin, tachycardia, increased body temperature, weight loss and a  decline in cognitive status. (Williams Hopper 2011 p 72, Scott 2010 p. 62). Medical management includes finding and stopping the source of the fluid loss, the replacement of  lost fluid with an intravenous infusion with the same osmolality of blood to increase the body’s blood  volume. ( Scott 2010 p.63). Nursing management includes the administration and maintenance of intravenous fluid replacement,  monitoring the daily weight of the patient, monitoring fluid input and fluid output, encouraging the  intake of fluids to aid in restoring fluid balance and providing mouth care to maintain the integrity of  the oral mucous membranes. (Crisp et.al. p. 73). Question 3 a) Midazolam is used in this procedure as it is a sedative, hypnotic agent and muscle relaxant. This  aims to reduce the amount of movement throughout the procedure and assists in keeping the patient  in a sedative state and impairs memory function ( Tiziani 2013 p. 967). Fentanyl would be used to  reduce pain during the procedure and also aids in the maintenance of the anaesthesia ( Tiziani 2013  p 928) Diprivan is used to induce sedation and also increases the effects of the hypnotic agent and  analgesia ( Tiziani 2013 p 793.) b) Midazolam acts by binding with a benzodiazepine receptor in the central nervous system which  inhibits neurotransmitters in the brain resulting in a calming sedative affect ( DrugBank, Midazolam  DB00683 2013). Midazolam given intravenously takes affect within 1.5 2.5 minutes. Adverse effects  include respiratory depression, memory impairment, anxiety, muscle weakness, drowsiness,  hypotension, dizziness, fatigue and decreased alertness. (Tiziani 2013 pp 964, 967) Fentanyl acts on receptors within the brain, spinal cord and muscles and bind with opioid receptors  producing an analgesic affect. Administered intravenously fentanyl takes affect almost immediately.   Side effects include respiratory depression, apnoea, dyspnoea, vomiting, nausea, increased intra  cranial pressure, bradycardia, sedation, confusion, constipation, hypotension and muscle rigidity.  (Tiziani 2013 p. 923) Diprivan suppresses the central nervous system and produces a loss of consciousness. Adminstered  intravenously diprivan takes affect within 30 seconds of administration. Side effects include  respiratory depression, tachycardia, hypotension, shivering and involuntary muscle movements (Tiziani 2013 p 793) Nursing care includes continuous monitoring of respiratory rate, heart rate and vital signs during  administration of these agents and throughout the procedure, ensuring that the dose is titrated to  produce the right affect, a sedation scale should be performed when the patient is conscious,  ensuring that the patient is aware that midazolam can cause muscle weakness so care should be  taken when mobilising. Central Nervous System toxicity may occur when all three medications are  given together therefore continuous monitoring is extremely important as the effects on the central  nervous system are increased ( Tiziani 2013 p 964,968). c) As this patient has renal failure the kidneys ability to filter and excrete waste is decreased, this may result in an accumulation of the medications and could possibly result in drug toxicity – especially  opiate medications (Tiziani 2013 p.925). This patient is elderly and may have increased sedation and  confusion after the procedure due to her age and renal function and is at a high risk of falls especially  as midazolam causes muscle weakness. Midazolam administered to an elderly patient can cause  delirium, therefore this patient is at an increased risk of being affected by this ( Tiziani 2013 p.964). Constipation is also going to affect this patient as this is one of the major side effects of opiate  medications. Reference List Corbett, J., Banks, A., (2013). Human Resourse Management :: GCSE Business Marketing Coursework

HR UCTION The topic under review is strategic alliances. This particular form of non-equity alliance between firms in the same industry (competitors) is becoming an increasingly popular way of conducting business in the global environment. Many different reasons of why such alliances are occurring have been recognized. These include: the increasing globalization of the world's economy resulting in intensified global competition, the proliferation and disbursement of technology, and the shortening of product life-cycles. This critique will use Kenichi Ohmae's viewpoint on strategic alliances as a benchmark for comparison. Firstly, a summary of Ohmae's article will be provided. Secondly, in order to critique Ohmae's opinion, it will be necessary to review other literature on the topic. Thirdly, a discussion of the various viewpoints and studies, that have hence arisen, will be discussed in detail. Finally, conclusions will be drawn with implications for companies operating in today's glob al environment, together with suggestions for future research on strategic alliances. THE GLOBAL LOGIC OF STRATEGIC ALLIANCES The underlying argument or reasoning behind Ohmae's opinion that strategic alliances, or entente, are the only way forward for all companies competing globally. "Globalization mandates alliances, makes them absolutely necessary." (Ohmae, 1989). The author has supported this viewpoint, that globalization makes strategic alliances necessary as vehicles for customer-orientated value, with four issues facing today's companies: 1. The Californization of Need; 2. The Dispersion of Technology; 3. The Importance of Fixed Costs, 4. Dangers of Equity. The first issue, described by Ohmae as the Californization of Need, refers to the convergence of customer needs and preferences and the fact that the national identity of many high-quality products has virtually disappeared. Secondly, companies can no longer maintain a leadership position based solely on superior, advanced technology. This results because of the increasing number of critical technologies embedded in the majority of products, therefore, no one can keep the technology out of the hands of competitors around the globe. Thirdly, Ohmae emphasizes the importance of fixed costs. He believes that companies can no longer compete by keeping their variable costs lower than their competitors. The majority of costs incurred by companies these days are fixed costs, therefore, what matters is maximizing marginal contribution from fixed costs and a logical way to do this through forming strategic alliances. The final issue Ohmae identifies is dangers of equity.

Wellness :: essays research papers

Freshman seminar Wellness paper 101 Ways of doing It With Out Actually doing it This program totally wasn’t what I expected it to be. To my surprise the whole thing was actually about relationships, and what to do on dates without having sex, and or sexual influence.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Attending college is a very different experience. It’s when most of us experience life situations and learn to make our own decisions. The problem is that many students, due to the influence of our society, decide to have sex because â€Å"everybody else is doing it†. But what many students don’t realize is that there both rewards and consequences when dealing with sexual intercourse. This is an important issue, especially when most of my fellow peers believe in â€Å"casual sex†. I personally believe that sex is something that shouldn’t be taking lightly†¦in other words, I’m not anybody’s booty call!!!!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Anyways, back to the seminar. In the discussion, many of us realized that dates seem to be a thing of the past. No one really goes on a â€Å"one on one† date anymore. Its always a group thing, going out to a party or just hanging out. I can’t even remember if I’ve ever been on a real date myself. Relationships lack that solid foundation of one to one communication, which is probably why most teens have sex: it’s what’s expected, yet nobody talks about it.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  During the seminar, we were educated in finding other ways to express ourselves and feelings to each other. Even though some were far-fetched and unrealistic (for example: a grave yard walk), some were actually feasible (example: a picnic). A few of the other suggestions included a K-mart party, which I personally would’ve evr thought of, but I guess it is another alternative to sex. Some of the more realistic ones included walks on the beach, athletic activities, dinner and a movie. Hopefully some of these ideas will be used around campus instead of sex. Many attending the meeting suggested other dating ideas such as horseback riding, test driving cars and playing golf. I didn’t quite agree with them because a.) horses are big animals b.) I don’t have a license and c.) I HATE golf!!!! Also during the seminar, we participated in an activity. We were split into groups, based on gender. The girls that attended the seminar wrote down some of the things they like to do and some of the things they hate, the boys in the room did the same.

Odyssey bibliography Essay

Odysseus was one of the famous Greek poets. He was Laertes and Anticlea’s son and was married to Penelope (a woman thought to be inordinately faithful) and was a father to Telemachus. Odysseus was the king of Ithaca, a favorite place in Athens, and was one of the few Greeks that returned home safely from troy and the Trojan War though it took a long time before they returned. He is believed to have written some poems in the end of eighth century BC. Odysseus was among the leader of Achaeans who have contributed to most part of Greek literature. In his different walks of life, he is view as a hero and in other side as a failure, in the focus of his bibliography as written by homer, his participation in Trojan war and his tricks that made him stand unique paving way for his success in his missions. He was a family man who focused on achievements and did not believe on failures, he believed in as supernatural power of gods that were making him strong in believe that they were in his support in the victory. The essay focuses on the life line of Odysseus, participation and contributions as well as his character traits as narrated by different poets and other literatures. Joachim, 2005) Odysseus early life When Odysseus was a young boy, he exhibited on his talent; his main fond was archery and was excelling on it. Young Odysseus was fond of hunting with his dog, Argos, he could not stop doing what he liked no matter the challenges example is when he was gored by a bear and left a scar on his thigh. The scar was a lifetime mark that would help his old nurse Eurycleia when he returned from his wonderings. He was know to mind less about the appearance, some people went far as saying that he had bandy-legged, but when he began talking, he was unstoppable. His cleverness brought him closer to goddess Athena; he became his protector at troy and later on the sea. Odysseus became one of the original suitors of Helen of troy. He came woo her in Sparta for it was expected of him though his main interest was in her cousin Penelope. To avoid dispute among the suitors that were interested in Helen, Odysseus suggested to her father to help him win Penelope, Helen’s cousin, her father feared the preference of one suitor. Odysseus suggested to Tyndareus to exact an oath to all suitors that they will defend the favored suitor and protect his marriage against anything wrong that may be done to him. Helen married Menelaus of the cursed horse. Icarius of Lacedaemon, the Penelope’s father, offered his daughter to Odysseus, the man who defeated him in foot race. Penelope’s father, the old king of Lacedaemon was trying to make the newly wedded couples to stay in Lacedaemon but Odysseus refused and set for Ithaca. After much insisting, Odysseus had to bade to his wife either to move with him or return to her father. Penelope did not respond but instead she covered her face which was a clear indication that she wished to move with her husband, this was a clear prove of her cleverness and wily as her husband. Martin, 2007) On arrival in Ithaca, Odysseus had to build a new palace for him and his new bride. The couple got a son, it did not take long before the news came to them that Paris had eloped Helen. After the Paris abducted Helen, her father invoked an oath of Tyndareus, Odysseus refused to make good out of it. He pretended to be mad just to proof his sanity after he avoided hitting a child. (Kayakas, 1988) Odysseus character Odysseus is described as a hero due to his cunning intelligence. The use of deceptive speech describes him well and is well manifested in his character traits as a peer of Zeus in counsel. His disguising character takes form altering his appearance and verbal, this may be seen in the event when he blinded Cyclops when he told him that his name was nobody the managed to escape after blinding Polyphemus. When polyphemuss was screaming and Cyclops asks him why he was doing that, he said that nobody is hurting him, every one (Cyclopes) thought no one was hurting him and may be he was suffering in the hands of immortal Zeus. According to Odyssey of Homer, it is evident that Odysseus was arrogant and proud, as he sailed away from the Cyclops’s island, he boasted as he shouted his name saying that no one defeat him ‘great Odysseus’. The Cyclopes were not happy with him and the threw bitter words to him as he tells his father that Odysseus blinded him which enraged Poseidon and caused the god to curse Odysseus home coming and delayed for a long time. (Rodney, 2006) Odysseus events Odysseus events are narrated and given from the middle of the plot; this has been done through flashbacks and story telling. The later authors have done this through imitation, examples of these authors are Virgil and Aeneid, the modern poets were not left behind such as Pope Alexander in the mock epic, mock-heroic also commonly known as ‘the rape of the rock’. At first we find Odysseus trying to assert control on the household and later at Athena’s advice while in search for news concerning his lost fathers. Odysseus was a captive for a long time of the beautiful nymph Calypso who he had spent with his seven years of his lost ten years. (Karykas, 2003) After his release by intercession of his patroness Athena, he leaves and his raft was destroyed by his known enemy Poseidon who was much annoyed because Odysseus had blinded Polyphemus his son. Odysseus washed up Scherie, which was the home to Phaeacians and is assisted by Nausicaa who treats him with great hospitability. When he returned he narrated about his adventures since he left troy to Phaeacians and the leader of his adventures satisfying their curiosity. This flash back extends back to where Odysseus stands and his tale told. Odysseus got a ship through loan from shipbuilding Phaeacians to return to Ithaca, he is assisted by swine hearder Emaeus to meet Telemachus, in the process he got back his house hold and managed to kill the suitors and then he was able to reunite with his faithful Penelope, his wife. Odyssey is divided into 24 books in all modern editions and translations. The message contained there in is convincing but not original, Alexandrian editors developed this by 3rd century BC. Through the period, the books have been given different titles. Barry, 2006) Odysseus and culture Different cultures have risen in concern of Odysseus; some of the cultures describe him as a hero and others as a scoundrel. Odysseus was ruling the Cephallenians, this were the people who were dwelling on the islands that was on the northwest coast of Greece. His palace was on the rocky island of Ithaca, compared to other Greek princes that were fighting at troy; he was not as wealthy as them though he was living a com fortable life. (Malcom, 2000) Trojan War According to myths of Greek, the Trojan war was war that was Achaeans against the city of troy after Helen was stolen by troy of Paris from her husband Menelaus who was the King of Sparta. Trojan War was among the most important events that happened in the Greek mythology which was narrated by many and different works of Greek literature that included the Iliad, Homer and the Odyssey. Trojan War believed to have originated from a quarrel between the Aphrodite, Athena and Hera goddesses after the Eris, goddess of strife and discord offered them a golden apple, and this is also referred to as apple of discord that was marked to be the fairest. When the goddess went to Paris and judged that Aphrodite as the fairest and should be the one to receive the apple. In exchange apple, Aphrodite made Helen to be the most beautiful woman and fallen in love with Paris who would take her to troy. Achaeans desecrated temples and they slaughtered Trojans, they got the wrath of gods’, only few of the Achaeans returned home safely while others found colonies in different places in the shores. The Romans were led by one of the surviving Trojan to their origin, Italy. Wood, 1998) Odyssey describes the Odysseus journey home. He was among the Achaean leaders. Other parts of the war have been narrated by cycle of epic poems, though has survived in fragments. The war episodes were important for they provided materials for the Greek literature and for the Roman poets like Ovid and Virgil. Odysseus had fought for more than ten years in the Trojan War before he came up with the idea of wooden horse. This was probable the reason why wily or c rafty was attached to his name. Odysseus incurred another decade on the way before arriving home after blinding Poseidon’s Cyclops son that brought a wrath to him. This delayed him to arrive in time so this covers him and his crews return way to Ithaca from Trojan War. (Jonathan, 2004) Dilemma of Odyssey Though the ancient Greeks great epic poems were attributed to the confusing figure of homer, not much is known about him and the contribution of odyssey beyond his name being attached to the poems. There is some doubt whether homer was the real author of Odyssey and Iliad. Homer played a primary role in shaping the master work, much is said about the probability of his contribution, if he is the real author, he must be a great literature artist. Odysseys are the most influential poems; Odysseus epics are used in the Greek education and culture throughout the age and have formed a backbone of human education from the time of Roman Empire and spread of Christianity. The translation of odysseys have brought an impact on Renaissance culture of Italy, this have helped in forming European tradition. The poems are of some use in determining when Homer and Odysseus lived, this gives a clue that make it easy to assume that they lived around 8th century, The Odyssey may belong closer to this period. The dilemma behind this is that odysseys were oral; this was to be passed through generations till the time of writing. Odysseus own means of poems are through singing. Another dilemma is what would affect the accuracy of when epics came to written form. (Michael, 1976) Conclusion Odysseus was a man of different character; no one could really describe his character confidently. He was a man of high moral and he used his cleverness to avoid what he wanted and avoid what seemed not good for him. During the Trojan War, Odysseus was a man his group could not do without; his mode of decision making was quite unique and stood as a pillar for the victory. The life of Odysseus was a life well lived, he left a legend behind that would become a literature to learned in European education, this was an epic that taught much of the Greeks’ empire and history.
